2004 Ride for the Roses - Austin Texas
To celebrate my fundraising efforts and take a break from the stress of my recent diagnosis, my wife, brother, mother and father traveled with me to the RFTR in Austin. Thanks to the generous donations of friends and family, I was able to raise nearly $6,000 for the LAF and reach the ÒGreenÓ Jersey level. This brought some special privileges, specifically the Peleton Appreciation Dinner.
The Peleton Dinner was held Friday night at an Exotic Animal Ranch, and was an awesome event. Cheryl Crow sang, Robin Williams did stand up, and even Lance got up and sang a little. The best part was getting to meet like minded cancer survivors and cyclists.
Saturday night, I was part of the Conversation with Lance. This was an interview with Lance moderated by Ann Curry/NBCÕs Today Show. I was part of a 15-person group of survivors who were allowed to ask Lance a series of questions. About 2,000 people attended and we got to hear LanceÕs views on survivorship, cancer treatment, and the LAF. After the interview ended, we were able to get a group photo with Lance and I was able to speak with him about my experiences. It was a very special night.
Sunday was the ride! My brother and I rode the 25-mile route and were glad we hadnÕt opted for more. Next year we both plan on getting more miles in before the ride. This was a great time; after the ride ended we were treated to refreshments (Thanks, Guinness!), food, and live entertainment. This also was a chance to meet with fellow survivors, cyclists, and family and enjoy the celebration.
I truly left Austin feeling great about the LAF, and ready to kick of the 2005 Peleton Project to raise money to fight cancer!
